Microsoft has indeed enabled passkey support for all consumer accounts, allowing users to generate passkeys for use across Windows, Android, and iOS devices. This feature represents a significant shift towards a passwordless future, offering users the option to authenticate their Microsoft accounts using face recognition, fingerprint, PIN, or a security key. Passkeys operate based on WebAuthn technology, creating two distinct keys for verification, one stored by the service and a private key on the user's device.
This move by Microsoft aligns with their broader strategy to move away from traditional passwords, following the introduction of Windows Hello authentication in 2015 and the fully passwordless option for Microsoft accounts in 2021. Passkeys are now available for signing into Microsoft apps and websites, with support for mobile versions of Microsoft applications expected to follow soon.
